VCRA “BULLETIN BOARD”

May, 2012

THE 2012 RALLY SEASON OPENS WITH A BANG!!! The 7th annual “All Stars For Autism” rally kicked off  May 3  in Rogers, Arkansas headquartered at the Embassy Suites Hotel.  There were 32 teams from across America eager to test their driving skills and equipment….most in preparation for the upcoming GREATRACE.  While there had been thunderstorm activity in the area the past few days, the skies cleared and the temperatures went up, making for  ideal rally conditions.

The event was kicked off with the mandatory meeting followed by the rally school. A sparkling  rendition of the “Star Spangled Banner” was performed by 12 year old Kennedy Gardner, and the “Pledge Of Allegiance” was directed by poster boy Justyce Gardner.  It was good to see there were a number of “Rookie” and “First Time” entries.  These folks were welcomed with open arms as they represent the next generation in the old car rally sport. And, of course, the balance of the field was made up of the familiar veteran teams that make up the VCRA family of racers.

Saturday would be the first day of “real” competition….the scoring format dictates that the total score of Stage 2 ( with one worst leg discarded) plus the total of Stage 3 would determine the class winners.  With 25 teams entered in the Run For Cash class, things were about to really heat up!! Off they go headed toward Tahlequah, Oklahoma for the lunch stop. Things got a little exciting as they came into the lunch stop…the local police had issued a storm warning including golf ball hail!! Whooops!  The skies turned black, however, as we enjoyed a great meal, the skies began to clear, and all was well…dodged another bullet!  Some experienced a little rain, but for the most part, the heat began to be the issue. Top runners were suddenly plagued with mechanical problems…the pack leader Team Jason broke a transmission…Harper and Blair broke an axle!! …they joined the group of bad luck teams including Team Joiner,  McKone & Teeter, Skaggs & Burke and Habetz & Regan. What the ##### is going on??  In the RFF and GH class, Team Plaster and Team Butler had already had mechanical problems that put them out.  When the day was done, Team Fredette showed the way with a 0m10.92s score, before the discarded leg!!!  That was followed closely by Coker / Cunningham and Team Mace.  Run For Fun class was taken by Richard / Huddleston and the Greenhorn division was headed up by Team White.  The “watering hole” was filled with stories this evening.

Sunday began under clear skies and the top runners were confident they were on their game.  A short run into a maze, then into the winding hills of southern Missouri to a pit stop in Seligman.  Then it was another short maze and a challenging run into Rogers to see who would claim victory. Must have been some real work going on as the top two teams each scored 2 ACES and two ones in the four leg stage!! WOW!  And so it was….Team Fredette showed them that he was back in form with a great 0m7.80s score to take the top cash prize, plus the Most ACE’s award (3) and the VCRA Champions jacket! They were followed closely by Cunningham & Coker with a 0m13.77s second place spot and Team Mace with a super 0m15.39s for third.  The RFF class was headed up by Team Stumb and the GH class was won by Team Deering.

Winding up the event with the awards luncheon, it was good food, good fun and all were safe. Check out the scores elsewhere on this web site. Thanks to all who joined us in the fun, and thanks to the sponsors and staff.  We think you are all winners!!

VCRA OFFICIAL RALLY CLOCKS…are a hot item, lately!  We have tried our best to fill the orders, however, at this moment, we are out, and, according to “Sawtooth” some critical parts are on back order.  We are told we should be receiving more the latter part of April.  Please call 918-801-2406 or e-mail to confirm that supplies are in so it meets your time requirement.  Cost will remain at $130.00 including shipping.

Friday began under clear skies, but rather windy. A new twist in the scoring format was introduced….Stage One would indeed be a “practice rally”, however, the winner would be awarded a cash prize ( a little incentive). Perhaps that made folks try a little harder, or was it just the way it was to be.  The course took the cars into Oklahoma, then back into Arkansas winding up at the lunch stop in Alma, Arkansas. Then it was a trip up through the Boston Mountains on the way back to Rogers. Was it the heat, or just the pressure of trying harder…no one can be sure, but the result was that three cars were out of the competition due to mechanical failure on the first day.  It was fun to see the competition heat up…and the team of Jason & Jason came up with the winning score of   0m9.90s.
