Bluebonnet  Rally
Chamber of commerce weather prevailed over the San Marcos area to the delight of the
competitors of the VCRA – Bluebonnet Rally held on April 4th thru 6th.  It did look gloomy for
the time leading up to the “Green Flag”, but Dick Burdick had promised sunshine at
noon…and so it was!

Day one was a 135 mile jaunt through some Texas farm country that would set the stage for
the remainder of the event…some double backs, tricky little transit and great scenery. When
the dust settled on stage one, the team of Knowles & Gentry had astounded the rest of the
field with an incredible 5.92 score for the day….this is with no legs thrown!  What a way to
start.

So the stage was set..could anyone match that performance?  Day two opened with
sunshine and an eager crowd of racers ready to hit the road.  Day two was literally a drive in
the park ( a slow wander through a park drive), some rolling hills and a no host lunch stop in
Schulenburg.  The afternoon saw a maze right off the bat, then into some pretty back country
driving ending at the courthouse in downtown San Marcos.  The Main Street Program
director, Kelly Franks, in cooperation with nine of the local restaurants, had arranged free
dinner at the restaurant of your choice.  Great food and a ton of fun..a big thanks to all those
that made the effort. And then the score for the day!  Again, with no legs thrown, Hedke &
McDorr scored a pretty amazing 15.80.

So what was to be…..total score will be “worst two legs” of stage one and two combined will
be “tossed”…stage three scores are added and the winner determined.  Stage three
headed for the hill country and an area called Canyon Lake.  Beautiful scenery, and some
tricky roads and maneuvers ….a stop for coffee and back to another maze…and another
maze.  And then it was over.  The course ended at the home of Dick & Johnnie Burdick for
the awards luncheon. What a great place to end the day…and with wonderful food and
drink…thanks to the Burdicks.

When the scores were tallied, the 1st place winner was H & L Crump in their 1932 Chevy
Coupe…2nd place went to Hedke & McDorr in the little ’29 Ford roadster  and 3rd place
went to Hanvey & Scott in the ’28 Ford. (These guys also won the “Most Aces” award with 2
Aces – there were three with two aces but they “Old Car’d” the others) A complete rundown
of all scores are posted on the website. Congratulations to you all!

There was a lesson learned by a couple of teams ..the team of Dickson & Correla were in
the “Run For Fun” division..guess what..they scored a 31.08 total which would have been
good for second place in the “Run For Cash” division..how about that!!! And then there is
our friend Marshall Sansbury (Run For Fun)  ..this team scored three aces during the event..
enough to have won the overall ace award!  Don’t get upset guys..we are just pokin’ a little
fun at you…

So the end came to the Texas Bluebonnet Rally..and everyone headed home.  Our wish is
that each and every one of you had a great time.  We thank you for coming and hope to see
you at the Hemmings Challenge in June.  And, a special thanks to all the volunteers, staff
members and the rest of you who helped make this the success it was.

Now its on to Scottsbluff  for the Sugar Valley Rally the first weekend in June  and then the
Hemmings Challenge on June 23rd thru 27th.  See you all soon.
